What Are Lunar Nodes in Astrology?

The lunar nodes form an opposite sign axis. In astrological tradition, the North Node (Rahu) is used as a symbol of unfamiliar growth direction, while the South Node (Ketu) is used for familiar strengths and default patterns. These meanings are reflective; a birth date cannot prove destiny, past lives or a fixed life purpose.

The lunar nodes are not physical celestial bodies. They are two mathematical points where the Moon's orbital path crosses the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun across the sky. Vedic and Western astrologers use the opposite signs as a symbolic axis. How Lunar Nodes Move Through the Zodiac

Unlike planets that move forward (direct) through the zodiac, the lunar nodes naturally move backwards, a motion called retrograde. This backward journey means the nodes travel from Aries to Pisces, from Pisces to Aquarius, and so on, completing a full cycle through all 12 signs in approximately 18.6 years.

Each pair of opposing signs hosts the nodes for roughly 18 months before the axis shifts. Everyone born within that window shares the same sign axis, so the result is generational rather than uniquely personal. Astrologers often use returns near ages 18-19, 37-38 and 56-57 as reflection checkpoints, not guaranteed crossroads or events.
