The Four Tarot Suits: Complete Element Guide

The tarot deck consists of 78 cards divided into the 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. The Minor Arcana is organized into four suits, each associated with a classical element, a domain of life, and a set of personality traits. Understanding the suits is essential for reading the Minor Arcana cards that appear in most tarot readings.

Suit of Wands. Fire Element 🔥

Wands represent passion, creativity, ambition, and action. Associated with the Fire element, this suit governs your career drive, creative projects, spiritual energy, and personal willpower. When Wands dominate a reading, the message is about motivation, inspiration, and taking bold action.

Element: Fire | Season: Spring | Direction: South

Life areas: Career, creativity, passion projects, ambition, adventure, spirituality

Zodiac signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Suit of Cups. Water Element 💧

Cups are the suit of emotions, relationships, love, and intuition. Connected to the Water element, Cups cards speak to matters of the heart, romantic connections, friendships, emotional healing, and creative inspiration born from feeling. This is the tarot suit associated with the element of water.

Element: Water | Season: Summer | Direction: West

Life areas: Love, emotions, relationships, intuition, creativity, spirituality

Zodiac signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Suit of Swords. Air Element 💨

Swords govern the mind, thoughts, communication, and conflict. As the Air element suit, Swords cards address mental challenges, difficult decisions, intellectual breakthroughs, and the truth, even when it's painful. Swords readings often reveal what you think versus what you feel.

Element: Air | Season: Autumn | Direction: East

Life areas: Decisions, communication, conflict, truth, mental clarity, justice

Zodiac signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Suit of Pentacles. Earth Element 🌍

Pentacles (also called Coins or Discs) represent material matters, finances, health, and the physical world. Grounded in the Earth element, Pentacles cards address money, career stability, property, physical health, and practical skills. When Pentacles appear, the reading focuses on tangible, real-world matters.

Element: Earth | Season: Winter | Direction: North

Life areas: Money, career, health, home, material security, practical skills

Zodiac signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

The Court Cards in Each Suit

Each suit contains four court cards representing personality archetypes at different maturity levels:

  • Page: The student, curiosity, new beginnings, messages
  • Knight: The seeker, action, movement, pursuit of goals
  • Queen: The nurturer, mastery, emotional intelligence, inward power
  • King: The leader, authority, experience, outward command

Number Cards (Ace through Ten)

Within each suit, the numbered cards follow a journey from Ace (pure potential, new beginning) through Ten (completion, culmination). Understanding this progression helps you read any Minor Arcana card:

  • Ace: New beginning, pure potential, seed
  • 2-3: Early development, choices, growth
  • 4-5: Stability then disruption, challenge, conflict
  • 6-7: Recovery, strategy, assessment
  • 8-9: Mastery, near completion, strength
  • 10: Completion, culmination, ending/beginning

How Suits Work in Readings

When multiple cards from the same suit appear in a tarot spread, that element dominates the reading's energy. A spread full of Cups suggests emotional matters are central. Multiple Swords indicate mental conflict or decisions ahead. Understanding your tarot birth card can also reveal which suit energy you naturally resonate with.

Historical Note: The four-suit structure originates from the Mamluk playing cards of 14th-century Egypt, which used cups, coins, swords, and polo sticks. When these cards reached northern Italy through Venetian trade routes, the Visconti-Sforza family commissioned the earliest known tarot decks around 1440. The modern suit associations (Wands/Fire, Cups/Water, Swords/Air, Pentacles/Earth) were formalized by the French occultist Eliphas Levi in his 1856 work 'Transcendental Magic'.
