Historical Note: The four-suit structure originates from the Mamluk playing cards of 14th-century Egypt, which used cups, coins, swords, and polo sticks. When these cards reached northern Italy through Venetian trade routes, the Visconti-Sforza family commissioned the earliest known tarot decks around 1440. The modern suit associations (Wands/Fire, Cups/Water, Swords/Air, Pentacles/Earth) were formalized by the French occultist Eliphas Levi in his 1856 work 'Transcendental Magic'.
