Tarot Court Cards Explained

Court cards, the Page, Knight, Queen, and King in each suit, are often the most confusing cards for beginners. Unlike numbered cards which describe situations, court cards represent people, personality aspects, or energy states. There are 16 court cards total across the four tarot suits.

The Four Court Card Ranks

Pages. The Student 📚

Pages represent youth, curiosity, new beginnings, and messages. They can indicate a young person in your life, a new phase you're entering, or news arriving. Pages are associated with the Earth element within their suit.

  • Page of Wands: Creative spark, adventurous youth, exciting news
  • Page of Cups: Emotional openness, romantic message, intuitive child
  • Page of Swords: Curious mind, new ideas, intellectual challenge
  • Page of Pentacles: Studious nature, financial opportunity, practical learning

Knights. The Seeker ⚔️

Knights represent action, movement, pursuit, and young adult energy. They charge forward with passion (sometimes recklessly). Knights can indicate a person who takes action or a phase of active pursuit in your life.

  • Knight of Wands: Passionate adventurer, bold action, travel
  • Knight of Cups: Romantic idealist, emotional pursuit, artistic inspiration
  • Knight of Swords: Swift thinker, aggressive communication, intellectual charge
  • Knight of Pentacles: Steady worker, methodical progress, reliable dedication

Queens. The Nurturer 👑

Queens represent mastery, emotional intelligence, inward power, and nurturing authority. They understand their suit's element deeply and lead through wisdom rather than force. Queens often represent mature feminine energy or your own inner wisdom.

  • Queen of Wands: Confident leader, creative visionary, magnetic warmth
  • Queen of Cups: Empathic healer, emotional depth, psychic intuition
  • Queen of Swords: Clear communicator, independent thinker, honest truth-teller
  • Queen of Pentacles: Abundant provider, practical wisdom, nurturing stability

Kings. The Leader 🏛️

Kings represent authority, experience, outward command, and mastery. They have fully embodied their suit's qualities and lead others with confidence. Kings often indicate a person in a position of power or your own capacity for leadership.

  • King of Wands: Visionary leader, entrepreneurial spirit, charismatic authority
  • King of Cups: Emotionally balanced leader, wise counselor, compassionate authority
  • King of Swords: Intellectual authority, fair judge, strategic commander
  • King of Pentacles: Wealthy provider, business master, material success

How to Read Court Cards in a Spread

Court cards can represent:

  • A real person in your life whose personality matches the card
  • An aspect of yourself that's active right now
  • An energy or approach to adopt for the situation
  • A developmental stage. Page (learning), Knight (acting), Queen (mastering internally), King (mastering externally)

Historical Note: Court card interpretations evolved significantly from Antoine Court de Gebelin's 1781 essay 'Le Monde Primitif' through the Golden Dawn's system developed by Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers. The Page-Knight-Queen-King hierarchy in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck differs from Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot which uses Princess-Prince-Queen-Knight, reflecting Crowley's Thelemic philosophical framework.
