Conventions differ. This calculator uses the Tarot School method: birth month plus day plus century plus year-within-century, reduced to the Major Arcana, then reduced again to reach the Soul card. Some sites add every single digit of the date instead, or stop the reduction at a different point, which can produce a different pairing for the same date. Neither is "wrong" — they are different traditions, and this page shows its arithmetic so you can verify the result.

If the reduced number lands between 10 and 21, its digits are added once more, giving a two-card sequence such as 17 and 8, The Star and Strength. The number 19 is the special case: it reduces twice (19, 10, 1), producing the only three-card sequence, The Sun, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician. If the total reduces below 10, the tradition pairs it with the card nine positions higher, so both roles are still represented.

Your birth month and day are added to the digits of the current year, then reduced to 22 or lower. It changes every year, which is why it is read as the chapter rather than the character. Your birth cards themselves never change.
